The world is an ever changing place. It seems at times that there is more violence, more hate, but I don’t really believe that to be true. Life is about balance, good with bad, peace with war, love with hate, strange with normal, same with different, right with wrong, strong with weak, quiet with loud. We need both polarities. We need both to attain balance.
However, sometimes I think we forget as a human that there is always an alternative view, we become self-righteous, all-knowing, downright stubborn. This is a human tool that is helpful in many pursuits like pushing a particular agenda, growing a successful business, making the case in a legal battle or winning an argument with a spouse or child. Yet it is also a human flaw that prevents us from seeing how we are more the same than different.
That our ultimate goals as a human being are more the same than different. The paths to those goals are different, extremely different. So we attach words like wrong, absurd, hypocritical, bizarre to that which is different. To me, this is a human flaw. To appease our own need to be correct; we blame, criticize, minimize even denigrate that which is different.
Part of this journey into letter writing and story telling is not to simply share the stories of people, the messages they feel are important to the future. It is for my own selfish understanding, but also a hope, a tremendous hope, that it unites groups of people to see that we are all more the same than different, especially when it comes to the heart of the matter.
